Quiet on the plains

April brings real heat to the northern plains. Sightseeing in Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan is still possible, but best done at dawn and late afternoon.

It is, however, one of the best months for tigers, and for escaping to the cool hills of the Himalaya.

Where to go in April

  • Tiger reserves: Excellent sightings as tigers visit waterholes. See our tiger safari guide.
  • Darjeeling and Sikkim: Rhododendrons in bloom and clear mountain views.
  • Himachal and Uttarakhand: Hill stations and the start of the trekking season.

What to avoid in April

  • Long days of sightseeing on the plains in the afternoon heat.
  • Goa and Kerala if you want the calm, dry season: humidity is building.

Festivals in April

  • Baisakhi (13 or 14 April): The Punjabi harvest festival, celebrated at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
