Holi marks the end of winter and the triumph of good over evil. On the night before, bonfires are lit for Holika Dahan. The next morning, everyone takes to the streets to throw coloured powder and water at friends, family and strangers alike.
It is joyful, noisy and very messy, and one of the most memorable days to be in India. Celebrations are biggest in the north.
Where to celebrate
- Mathura and Vrindavan: The towns linked with Krishna, about an hour from Agra, celebrate for a week or more, with temple Holi, flower Holi and processions.
- Barsana: Famous for Lathmar Holi, when women playfully chase men with sticks, held several days before the main Holi day.
- Jaipur and Udaipur: Hotel and palace celebrations make an easier, more relaxed way to join in.
- Varanasi: Wild and spirited on the ghats, best experienced with a local guide.
- Shantiniketan, West Bengal: A gentler spring festival, Basanta Utsav, with music and dance.
How to enjoy Holi safely
- Wear old clothes you can throw away. White shows the colours best.
- Rub coconut oil into your skin and hair beforehand so the colour washes off more easily.
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses and keep your phone in a sealed plastic bag.
- Celebrate in the morning; things wind down by early afternoon.
- Women may feel more comfortable joining in with a group, a guide or a hotel celebration, as crowds can get rowdy.
- Be careful with bhang, a cannabis drink traditionally served at Holi. It is much stronger than many visitors expect.
Tip: Many shops, restaurants and sights close on the morning of Holi, and some transport stops. Plan a quiet travel free day.
