Hiking and trekking tours in Nepal

Most treks in Nepal are teahouse treks: you walk for five to seven hours a day and sleep in simple lodges run by local families, so you only carry a day pack while porters or pack animals take the rest.

The big choices are the region and how much time you have. Everest Base Camp needs around two weeks including the flight to Lukla, the Annapurna treks can be done in four to twelve days from Pokhara, and Langtang is the closest major trek to Kathmandu.

Hiking and trekking tours in Nepal: questions

When is the best time to trek in Nepal?

October and November bring the clearest mountain views and settled weather. March to May is the second season, warmer and with rhododendrons in flower. Winter treks are possible at lower altitudes, while the June to September monsoon brings rain, leeches and cloud on most routes.

Do I need a guide to trek in Nepal?

Since 2023 most foreign trekkers in Nepal's national parks and conservation areas must walk with a licensed guide, and restricted areas such as Manaslu and Upper Mustang have always required one. Rules can vary by region, so check what each tour includes.

How fit do I need to be?

You don't need climbing experience for any of the popular teahouse treks, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours a day, often uphill, for many days in a row. Training on hills or stairs in the months before you go makes a real difference.

Will I get altitude sickness?

Anyone can be affected above about 2,500 metres, whatever their fitness. Everest Base Camp is above 5,300 metres, so good itineraries include acclimatisation days and climb slowly. Compare how many rest days each tour builds in, not only its length.

What is usually included in a Nepal trekking tour?

Most tours include a guide, trekking permits, lodges on the trail and transfers, and many include meals on the trek and porters. Flights to Lukla, hotels in Kathmandu, tips and travel insurance vary, so read the inclusions before you compare prices.
