Hawa Mahal

Jaipur · UNESCO World Heritage

Hawa Mahal, the Palace of the Winds, was built in 1799 so the women of the royal household could watch street life and processions without being seen. Its five storey facade of pink sandstone is pierced by 953 small latticed windows that also let cool breezes through.

It sits in the heart of Jaipur's walled Pink City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is usually seen on a Jaipur city tour with the City Palace and the Jantar Mantar observatory, both a short walk away.

What to see

  • The facade. The famous view is from the street. It looks best in early morning sun, before the traffic builds.
  • The rooftop cafes opposite. Several cafes across the road have terraces looking straight at the windows, ideal for photos with a chai.
  • Inside. Narrow ramps rather than stairs lead up through small chambers and coloured glass windows to views over the old city and Jantar Mantar.

Hawa Mahal: questions

Is it worth going inside Hawa Mahal?

It is worth half an hour, especially with a composite ticket. The facade is the main attraction, but the upper levels give fine views over the old city.

Why is it called the Palace of the Winds?

The small latticed windows let air circulate through the building, keeping it cool in Jaipur's hot summers.
