6 daysAmber Fort
Jaipur · UNESCO World Heritage
Amber Fort, also spelled Amer, was the seat of the Kachwaha rulers before they built Jaipur. Its palaces climb a hillside above Maota Lake, with gateways, courtyards and halls decorated with carved marble, painted plaster and thousands of tiny mirrors.
The fort is about eleven kilometres north of Jaipur's old city and is the highlight of most Jaipur sightseeing days. Go early, before the tour buses and the midday heat.
What to see
- Jaleb Chowk. The great courtyard where returning armies once paraded, reached through the Suraj Pol sun gate.
- Diwan-i-Am. The hall of public audience with its double row of columns and views back down to the lake.
- Ganesh Pol. A richly painted gateway leading into the private palaces.
- Sheesh Mahal. The Mirror Palace, whose walls and ceilings are covered in convex mirror work that glitters in the faintest light.
- Jaigarh Fort. The fortress on the ridge above, connected by walls, with one of the largest cannons ever built on wheels.
Tips for your visit
- Getting up: walk the ramp from the lake (about 15 minutes), or take a jeep to the upper gate. We suggest avoiding the elephant rides for animal welfare reasons.
- The Jaipur composite ticket covers Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and several other sights and is valid for two days.
- Stop at the viewpoint on the road from Jaipur for the classic photo of the fort reflected in Maota Lake.
