Vietnam's e-Visa is open to every nationality and allows stays of up to 90 days, with single or multiple entries. Citizens of a number of countries, including the UK and much of Europe, do not need a visa at all for shorter visits.

The most important rule: apply only on the official government site. Many lookalike websites charge several times the real fee.

Tip: Flying straight into Phu Quoc island? Visitors of any nationality can stay on Phu Quoc for up to 30 days without a visa, but you need a visa to continue to the mainland.

How to apply for the e-Visa

  • 1. Go to the official portal, evisa.gov.vn. Only addresses ending in .gov.vn are run by the government.
  • 2. Upload a passport style photo on a white background and a scan of your passport photo page.
  • 3. Enter your travel dates and the airport or border crossing where you will enter Vietnam.
  • 4. Pay US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry by card.
  • 5. Processing usually takes about 3 working days, longer around Tet. Print your approved e-Visa and carry it with your passport.

Rules people often miss

  • Your passport needs at least six months' validity from your date of entry.
  • Your entry point on the application must match where you actually arrive.
  • Check every detail before paying: mistakes in your name or passport number can mean applying again.
  • If you plan to visit Cambodia or Laos and come back, choose a multiple entry e-Visa.
