My Son Sanctuary

Central Vietnam · UNESCO World Heritage

My Son was the religious heart of the Champa kingdom, which ruled central Vietnam for over a thousand years. Its Hindu temples, built in brick from around the 4th to the 13th centuries, stand in a green valley ringed by mountains.

Many were damaged in war, but the surviving towers and carvings are beautiful and atmospheric, especially early in the morning. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What to see

  • Group B, C and D. The best preserved cluster of towers and carvings.
  • Group A. Once the largest tower, badly damaged in war; the ruins still impress.
  • The site museum. Explains Cham history and the restoration work.
  • Cultural performance. Traditional Cham dance is performed several times a day.

Tips

  • Go at opening time for soft light and fewer people, before the heat.
  • Some tours return to Hoi An by boat along the Thu Bon River.
  • Bring water and a hat: there is little shade.
