Cu Chi Tunnels

The south

During the wars of the 20th century, people around Cu Chi dug an extraordinary network of tunnels, with living areas, kitchens and meeting rooms underground. Sections have been preserved and widened so visitors can crawl through them.

It is a half day trip from Ho Chi Minh City and a powerful introduction to the history of the Vietnam War.

What you see

  • Tunnel sections. Short stretches you can crawl through, some widened for visitors; you can skip them if you prefer.
  • Hidden entrances. Tiny trap doors concealed in the forest floor.
  • Booby traps and bunkers. Displays of the traps and shelters used during the war.

Tips

  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting dusty, and bring insect repellent.
  • The tunnels are tight and hot. Anyone claustrophobic can see plenty above ground.
  • Go early or late to avoid the midday tour groups.
  • Combine with the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City for context.

Cu Chi Tunnels: questions

Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc?

Ben Dinh is closer and busier; Ben Duoc is further from the city, quieter and includes original tunnel sections and a memorial temple.

Do you have to go into the tunnels?

No. Crawling through is optional, and there is plenty to see above ground.
