Udaipur and Lake Pichola

Rajasthan

Udaipur, the City of Lakes, was founded in the 16th century by Maharana Udai Singh II of Mewar. Its huge City Palace stretches along the shore of Lake Pichola, facing the white Lake Palace and the Jag Mandir pavilions on their islands.

It is the most relaxed city in Rajasthan and a favourite stop on longer tours, usually for two nights, often driving from Jodhpur via the Jain temples of Ranakpur.

What to see and do

  • City Palace. A maze of courtyards, mirrored rooms and balconies built over four centuries, with fine views over the lake.
  • Sunset boat ride. Cruise past the Lake Palace hotel to Jag Mandir island as the palace walls turn gold.
  • Bagore ki Haveli. An 18th century mansion on the waterfront that hosts an evening show of Rajasthani dance and puppetry.
  • Jagdish Temple and the old city. A carved Hindu temple at the top of lanes full of miniature painting studios and small shops.
  • Monsoon Palace. A hilltop palace outside the city with views over the lakes at sunset.
