Khajuraho Temples

Central India · UNESCO World Heritage

The Khajuraho temples were built by the Chandela dynasty between about 950 and 1050. Around twenty five of an original eighty five survive, their sandstone walls covered in carvings of gods, dancers, musicians, animals and daily life, including the erotic scenes that made them famous.

Khajuraho lies in Madhya Pradesh between Agra and Varanasi, so tours often add it as a one or two night stop on the way between the two.

What to see

  • Western Group. The ticketed main group in a landscaped park, including the Kandariya Mahadeva temple, the largest and most richly carved.
  • Lakshmana temple. One of the best preserved, with lively friezes of armies, hunts and processions around its base.
  • Eastern and Southern Groups. Smaller Jain and Hindu temples a short drive away, much quieter than the main group.
  • Sound and light show. An evening show in the Western Group tells the story of the Chandela kings.

About the carvings

The erotic sculptures make up only a small part of the carving. Most panels show gods and goddesses, celestial nymphs, musicians and scenes of everyday life, and their meaning is still debated by historians.

Khajuraho Temples: questions

Is Khajuraho worth visiting?

Yes, if you love architecture and sculpture. The carving is among the finest in India, and the town is quiet compared with Agra or Varanasi.

How long do I need in Khajuraho?

One night is enough for the Western Group and one of the other groups. Two nights lets you add the evening show and nearby Panna National Park.
