Humayun's Tomb

Delhi · UNESCO World Heritage

Humayun's Tomb was built in the 1560s for the second Mughal emperor by his widow, Empress Bega Begum. It was the first great garden tomb in India, with a double dome rising above a red sandstone platform at the centre of a four part Persian style garden.

Its proportions and setting clearly influenced the Taj Mahal, built about eighty years later, which is why many visitors like to see it before travelling on to Agra. It is one of the calmest and most photogenic places in Delhi.

What to see

  • The main tomb. Humayun's cenotaph lies in the central chamber under the dome. More than a hundred members of the Mughal family are buried in the building and its platform, giving it the nickname of the dormitory of the Mughals.
  • The charbagh garden. Water channels divide the garden into four parts, an idea of paradise later repeated at the Taj Mahal.
  • Isa Khan's tomb. An earlier octagonal tomb just inside the complex, built some twenty years before Humayun's.
  • Sunder Nursery. Next door, a restored Mughal garden with more monuments and a quiet place to walk.
