Hampi

The Deccan · UNESCO World Heritage

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, one of the richest cities in the world in the 15th and 16th centuries, until it was sacked in 1565. Its temples, palaces and bazaars lie scattered over some twenty five square kilometres of surreal boulder strewn hills beside the Tungabhadra River.

Hampi is in Karnataka, usually reached by overnight train or a drive from Bangalore or Goa, and deserves at least two full days.

What to see

  • Vittala temple. Hampi's masterpiece, with its stone chariot and the musical pillars of its great hall.
  • Virupaksha temple. A working temple still in use since before the empire, at the end of the old Hampi bazaar.
  • Royal enclosure. The Lotus Mahal, the elephant stables and the stepped tank of the royal centre.
  • Matanga Hill and Hemakuta Hill. The best places for sunrise and sunset over the ruins and boulders.
  • Coracle rides. Round basket boats cross the Tungabhadra River, a fun way to see the ruins from the water.
