Custom Peru tours, planned by a local specialist

Most people come to Peru for Machu Picchu, but how you get there makes the trip. A custom, private itinerary lets you choose between the train and a trek, give yourself time to adjust to the altitude in Cusco, and add Lake Titicaca, the Amazon or the desert coast around it.

Answer a few questions and a local specialist will send you a free, no-obligation itinerary and price.

Peru trip ideas

Starting points, not fixed packages. Choose one, combine two or describe something completely different.

Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu

7 to 9 days

The classic first trip. Start in the Sacred Valley, which is lower than Cusco and an easier place to adjust to the altitude, visit the markets and terraces of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, take the train to Machu Picchu, then finish with a few days exploring Cusco.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

8 to 10 days

Four days on the original Inca stone path, past cloud forest ruins, arriving at the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu. Permits are limited and sell out early, so your specialist will build the rest of the trip around the date you can get. A shorter one day version is also possible.

Salkantay or Lares trek

8 to 10 days

Two great alternatives to the Inca Trail that don't need the same permits. Salkantay crosses a high pass beneath a glaciated peak before dropping into the jungle, while Lares is gentler and passes through weaving villages. Both finish with a visit to Machu Picchu.

Peru highlights with Lake Titicaca

12 to 16 days

Add the colonial city of Arequipa and condor watching in Colca Canyon, then travel across the high plains to Puno for Lake Titicaca's floating Uros islands and a homestay on Amantani or Taquile.

Machu Picchu and the Amazon

10 to 12 days

Pair the Andes with three or four nights in a rainforest lodge in Tambopata, a short flight from Cusco. Expect canoe trips, canopy towers, macaws at the clay licks and night walks with a naturalist guide.

What your specialist can customize

Tell us what matters to you in the planner and your Peru itinerary will be built around it.

  • Your own guide

A private guide at Machu Picchu and on every tour, rather than joining a large group.

  • Where you sleep

Family run guesthouses, hacienda hotels in the Sacred Valley or luxury stays in Cusco.

  • Train or trek

Choose your train class to Machu Picchu, or walk in on the Inca Trail, Salkantay or Lares.

  • Time to acclimatise

Sleep lower in the Sacred Valley first and keep the first days at altitude gentle.

  • Add-ons

The Amazon, Rainbow Mountain, the Nazca Lines, Paracas, or the Galapagos in Ecuador.

  • Your dates

Start any day you like, with Machu Picchu entry and train times booked to match.

When to go to Peru

May to September
The dry season, with sunny days and cold nights in the Andes. June to August is the busiest time.
April and October
Shoulder months with fewer people, green landscapes and a mix of sun and showers.
November to March
The wet season in the Andes, with afternoon rain and muddy trails, but quieter sites and lush scenery.
February
The Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. Machu Picchu stays open and can be reached by train.

Custom Peru tour questions

How much does a custom Peru tour cost?

It depends on how long you travel, your hotel standard, your train class to Machu Picchu, whether you add internal flights to places like Lake Titicaca or the Amazon, and how many people are in your group. Add a rough budget in the planner and the specialist will design around it and quote in your currency. Asking for a quote is free.

How far ahead should I book the Inca Trail?

As early as you can. Daily permits are limited and only licensed operators can buy them, so dates from May to August can sell out months in advance. If your dates are already taken, Salkantay and Lares are excellent alternatives, and Machu Picchu entry tickets can be arranged separately.

Will the altitude be a problem?

Cusco sits at around 3,400 metres and Lake Titicaca is higher still, so most people feel the altitude at first. Starting in the lower Sacred Valley, taking the first day or two easy and drinking plenty of water all help. Mention any concerns in the planner and your itinerary will be paced to suit.

How many days do I need in Peru?

Seven days is enough for Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Allow ten to fourteen days if you want to add Lake Titicaca, Arequipa or the Amazon, and a few more if you plan a multi-day trek.

Who will plan my trip?

We pass your request to a trusted local travel specialist for Peru, who replies directly with an itinerary and price. There is no obligation to book, and you only pay if you decide to go ahead.
